Deep Water and Floating Rice Systems and Water Management in the Flood-Prone Area of the Chao Phraya Delta

The seminar will present the findings of a research (funded by NRCT) on the traditional rice systems of the Chao Phraya delta. This includes a detailed description of the rice systems and of their relationships with topography and with the water regime (natural and regulated). Satellite images, Digital Elevation Models and 800 points of obervations are combined for the analysis.

Drainage management, is also specified and recommendations for flood management are derived. A detailed quantitative insight on the buffer function of the flood plain and on the relationship between the stored water and dry-seson cropping in the lower delta is provided.

The objective of this workshop is to present the results of the three-year study by KU-UT on Chao Phraya and Mae Klong basins to persons concerned with the development and management of irrigated agricultural systems in Thailand. The participants will have a chance to discuss the results of this study and to share their experiences with the KU-UT research team. The lessons learnt from this study can be used for future improvement of agricultural management in Thailand such as irrigation, agricultural machinery and watershed management.
