Summary :
In the last three decades, rapid acceleration in
urbanization, industrial development in the Central basin of Thailand and also the
development at a large scale of agricultural practices dependent on chemicals have
generated pollutants at a rate which far exceeds the capacity of the streams to absorb
them. Consequently, water pollution has become a major issue for many of the rivers
systems of the Central basin.
Over the last ten years there have been numerous studies on the extent of pollution of
surface streams throughout the study area but they never include any geographic
information system (GIS) development or water quality modeling and did not take an
integrated approach to environment management.
This study consisted in establishing a database of pollution sources within the Central
basin, developing a mathematical water quality model of the major waterways, formulating
water quality improvement policy and actions plans to improve surface water quality over
the planning period and lastly preparing a detailed wastewater management investment plan.
The deliverables of the study have been compiled into three parts : 3 reports, 21 annexes
and public information materials (video and brochures).
