Summary :
The rice systems of the Central Plain of Thailand have undergone
drastic changes in the last 30 years. Technical change has been driven by
a combination of factors including demographic changes, land development
and water control, and mechanization. The recent spread of wet direct
seeding is put in its historical context and the complementary between dry
and wet broadcasting, the two currently dominant techniques, is shown to
be related to different socio-economic and hydrologic situations. Some
prospects on the scope for further technical change are addressed.
